Welcome to Albemarle Terroir. This Blog will be an exploration of the terroir of Albemarle County Virgina. Albemarle County, surrounding central Virginia Counties, and the Commonwealth of Virigina have a thriving and vibrant wine industry. I’ll be writing about the terrior of the Old Dominion focusing on Albemarle County and it’s climate.
In George Taber’s “Judgment of Paris”, terroir is succinctly described.
“Climatology, geology, and history all fuse in the French concept of terroir. There’s no exact English translation for the word that combines all the factors that go into making outstanding wine. Terroir is founded on the conviction that there is a perfect place for making wine, where the soil and the weather and the knowledge of the ages combine to produce truly great vintages. ”
I’m a climatologist and suspect that Albemarle Terroir will focus on the evolving climate in Albemarle County and how it may impact a given years vintage. But it certainly won’t be limited to only climate and wine. As described above, terrior is much more than climate alone.
